Latest U.S. Visa Improvements for Nigerians

The United States has recently made several changes to its visa application process for Nigerian citizens. These updates aim to improve efficiency, reduce fraud, and ensure smoother interview procedures. Whether you’re applying for a tourist visa or seeking permanent residency with an immigrant visa, here’s what you need to know:

1. Mandatory DS-160 Form Barcode Matching for Non-Immigrant Visas

Starting April 22, 2025, all Nigerian applicants for non-immigrant U.S. visas, such as B1/B2 tourist or business visas, must ensure that the barcode on their DS-160 application form matches exactly the barcode used to schedule their visa appointment.

Why It Matters:

  • If the barcode doesn’t match, you will not be allowed into the consular section for your interview.
  • This rule applies to both the Abuja and Lagos U.S. Embassies.

What You Should Do:

  • Double-check that the DS-160 form you completed is the same one linked to your appointment.
  • If a mistake was made, you must correct it at least 10 days before your interview by contacting support through the U.S. Visa portal (AVITS). In some cases, you may have to pay a new fee and reschedule.

2. Two-Step Process Introduced for Immigrant Visa Applicants in Lagos

As of January 1, 2025, those applying for immigrant visas, such as marriage-based green cards, employment-based visas, and other permanent residency categories, through the U.S. Consulate in Lagos must now go through a mandatory two-visit process.

Here’s How It Works:

  • First Visit, Document Review: Applicants must attend a document review session before their actual visa interview. This step confirms that all required paperwork is in order.
  • Second Visit, Formal Visa Interview: Only after completing the first visit can you return for the actual visa interview.

Important Note:

Skipping the first step will lead to cancellation of your visa interview appointment. You will not be admitted for the interview unless this process is completed.

What These Changes Mean for Nigerians

These updates intend to simplify the visa application process while improving security and ensuring all paperwork is correct before interviews. Although they may seem like extra steps, they aim to reduce processing errors and lower the chance of being turned away unexpectedly.

Tips for Applicants:

  • Start your application early to allow time for corrections.
  • Review all instructions carefully on the official U.S. visa website or embassy portal.
  • Prepare for two visits if applying for an immigrant visa.

Navigating the U.S. visa process can be complex. Staying informed about the latest changes gives you an advantage. Whether you’re visiting family, attending a business event, or starting a new life in the U.S., understanding these new requirements can help ensure a smoother journey.
