The general cost of living in Austria is about 900 – 1,300 EUR per month, this rough estimate covers accommodation, food, transportation, and personal requirements for studies, and entertainment. However, this estimate is also determined by how you spend.

Estimated Tuition Fees in Austria

If you come from a non-EU country, the tuition fees amount to €726.72 per semester. Many public universities make exceptions for students who come from developing countries. To see if your country is on the list, check the information on the official university page. 

Austria university’s admissions applications include the following;

For Bachelor’s Programmes:

  • Proof of nationality (photocopy of your international passport).
  • An equivalent secondary school leaving certificate.
  • Your certificate of special qualification for university studies (orig. German: “Nachweis der besonderen Universitätsreife“): you have to prove that you would be entitled to admission to your chosen degree programme in the country which issued your secondary education diploma.
  • German language proficiency (secondary school leaving certificate confirming German lessons of at least 4 years or a German language diploma or similar documents) i.e. Austrian Language Diploma German, Goethe-Institut e.V., Telc GmbH, Austrian Integration Fund (AIF)

For Master’s Programmes

You will need to have completed at least a 6-semester specialized relevant Bachelor’s degree (min 180 ECTS).

For Ph.D. Programmes

Master’s degree in the same field of study as your research proposal or equivalent.

Please note that some programmes will require entrance examinations e.g. medical universities, universities of the arts, and some study programmes like architecture, biology, economy, informatics, medicine, etc. 

Ensure that you enquire in good time regarding application deadlines, special requirements, and dates for entrance examinations. (Closing date for application for entrance examinations can be up to six months before the beginning of the semester).

Always make sure you check  the university application deadlines in Austria to ensure all your documents are ready before the said dates. 

If you are from outside the EU/EEA, the application deadlines are during September (winter semester) and February (summer semester).
